Meet our team

  • Luke Smith

    Managing Director

Luke leads the day-to-day running and growing of the business, supported by a team with a wealth of skills and experience. With a background in architectural technology, he combines technical know-how with a commercial mindset and is committed to improving the performance & quality of buildings through in-situ measurement and feedback mechanisms.

Married and with three boys, he spends most of his weekends biking with the kids at a local BMX track, skatepark or pump track!

  • Dr Richard Jack

    Technical Director

Richard is a building physicist who specialises in measuring the performance of buildings and energy balance systems. He has spent the last 10 years researching and developing measurement methods in both academia and industry, and is passionate about making accessible measurement solutions for widespread use.

He has a young daughter with his partner, and when they aren’t busy making family memories, Richard takes time out to relax by flying model aeroplanes as a regular member of the UK's national team and riding his bike.

  • Richard England

    Head of Digital

Richard holds a Masters's degree in low-energy building engineering and is an expert in all things technology, instrument or sensor related. He helps to bring building performance measurement into the 21st century by leading our digital development, cloud-based infrastructure and creating products with award-winning user experiences.

He is kept just as busy outside work with hobbies which include badminton and scuba diving, although contrary to his photograph – not all at once!

  • Rachel Brain

    Customer Relationship Manager

Rachel has spent much of her career working in environmental sustainability-related roles. As the Customer Relationship Manager she works to keep things running smoothly and will often be the first person our customers speak to when contacting us.

As well as playing guitar, her dog Ronnie is her main hobby outside of work, and who has also become the unofficial office dog with regular appearances during the week.

  • Stephanie Horwood

    Office Administrator

Stephanie has a finance background and is AAT Level 4 qualified. Her role covers a variety of office tasks including finance, helping to coordinate our training sessions and processing sales.

Once her children are in bed for the evening, she unwinds by curling up in front of the TV with one of her incredibly detailed cross-stitch projects.

  • Tanya Jane

    Marketing Manager

Tanya describes herself as a non-technical, technical marketing manager. With over 20 years’ experience as a B2B marketing manager in the embedded technology space, her experience of delivering marketing plans for a technical offering without being technical herself brings a fresh focus to any strategy.

When she is not working, you can find her either enjoying long walks with her dog Twiglet, or baking and cooking for friends and family.

  • James Banks

    Product Test Engineer

James has a BSc in Physics and Mathematics and five years' experience in land surveying. His role with BTS spans product development and data processing in the office; servicing, repairing and testing equipment in our workshop; as well as supporting customers and conducting building performance measurements in the field.

Out of the office, if he isn’t on his motorbike he can be found either gaming or outside stargazing, especially on a clear night.

  • Jordan Hanley

    Product Engineer

Jordan’s career as a product engineer started with a HNC in manufacturing and a mechanical engineering apprenticeship. These paved the way to a career which brings together improvements not only to the design of the product, but also how the product is produced. He is usually found deep in the workshop honing the finer details of one of the parts of our flagship products, or streamlining how we create the finished article.

Jordan’s hobbies are wide-ranging. Starwars, 3D printing, space, his coral fish tank and growing his own food are just a small selection. His absolute favourite pastime however, is spending time with his wife and 2 children.

  • Martin Hawes

    Software Engineer

Martin has a background in software engineering and a degree in computer science. He specialises in all things software from cloud-based web applications to embedded systems and beyond. His role covers product development and bug hunting across all of our products.

He is also the office rock star and is often found gigging around the local area at weekends.

  • Karl Smith

    Software Engineer

Karl’s background began with a computing degree and a decade spent teaching computer science before moving into industry where he has focussed his skills into software design. Since joining BTS, Karl has been involved with the complete portfolio of products and has been instrumental in implementing significant improvements to all the latest releases and updates.

Karl wins the award for the most varied and extensive list of interests at BTS! His list of hobbies includes hiking, mountain climbing, painting intricate wargames miniatures, Shotokan Karate and busking with his guitar.

We are a dedicated and passionate team of building performance engineers, energy experts, building physicists and technology specialists. Our aim is to make building performance measurement the norm and reduce the energy performance gap through testing and validation of real-world building performance.
